WMBC—FALL, WINTER AND SPRING TRAIL CREW INFO

We’re happy to announce that Erin Baker’s Wholesome Baked Goods is now a sponsor for our trail crews. They’ll be will donating insanely good Breakfast Cookies to the cause!

Other local businesses are aslo stepping up this year to make our trail outings even more enjoyable by providing food for the breakfast and lunch for the crews and a bit of fun swag afterward. But most cool of all is they are helping get a few more bodies out on the trail to get the work done. Don't forget our regular ouitings too though-they're listed below.

Transition Bikes Sponsored Trail Day 12/15/07

A rainy day and a foot of fresh snow at Baker wasn't enough to keep the 30 or so trail crew volunteers from showing up for a day of trail maintenance on Saturday, Dec. 15. Several maintenance projects on both Scorpion and Evolution got accomplished despite the sloppy conditions.

Some of the highlights on Evo include:

  • The last berm in the berm section got built up quite a bit making puddles a thing of the past, and you should keep more speed for the next section which was buffed as well.
  • The deteriorating approach to the log ride/drop in above the stinger also was cribbed in and back-filled making it a super smooth approach.
  • Some drainage work was done in a few spots.
  • And finally, a couple of the smaller jumps on the lower section were built back up.

On Scorpion the projects we worked on include:
  • The first log ride, which was a natural surface, was cut down to a flat 4-inch riding surface.
  • Work also started on a skinny up/down in the next section after the log ride, but didn't get completed in time.
  • Repairs on a couple berms were done.
  • More drainage work was done too. That's the one good thing about working in the rain. You can see where the drainage needs to go!
The Transition guys were all there throwing dirt. Thanks to Kevin for providing the pizzas! The guys from Dirt Corps came up from Seattle to lend a skilled hand. And a bunch of young guys from the local schools came out and helped out for the day. Thanks to everyone who helped make Galbraith's FR trails even better.
Cheers,

Hawk

Lower Bobs 11/5/07

Volunteers were greeted with sunny skies and a beautiful fall day for the first outing of the year for the Sunday Crew. 12 volunteers (17 if you include the kids) set out to re-route and repair the bridge on Lower Bob's and build a new skinny where the old bridge was. The re-reoute and new bridge is done and looks great. We almost finished the whole project and all we have left to do is deck the skinny.

This was a fun session that was a good refresher for the year. It had a bit of everything from benchwork to bridge work and rock armoring footings.

Thanks to everyone that turned out to help.

TRAIL BUILDING
PAST PROJECTS

The Bottle Opener

WMBC Volunteer Crew and Bottle Opener Panorama View

The Bottle Opener is a new trail connector that was finished June 1st, 2007. It was constructed by WMBC Volunteers on Galbraith Mountain and connnects the Keystone and the Oly with some nice singletrack. This eliminates a logging road section that interupted the sweet singletrack flow. The trail is an XC/All Mountain Trail and rides well in both directions. The volunteer crew did a great job getting a good trail bed and with the recent rains and sun the trail has firmed up nicely and is another great addition to the mountain.

Evolution

The evolution of Evolution continues and many new features and reroutes were recently built creating more trail and challenges for riders. Some highlights include: a new section of trail near the top of the trail that takes riders to the clearing and offers stunning views of Mt. Baker, Canada, and the San Juan Islands. This new line also gives riders a better approach to the 75-foot skinny log ride that was built in February. The biggest project was the reroute of the middle section. This new section incorporates a small berm after the log drop step-down where riders then hit a few jumps and 2 stump drops before rejoining the original trail. In addition to the additional jumps and drops, this new section bypasses a flow-killing pedaling section and an elevation-wasting eroded section. We also built a new step-down ladder hit and rerouted a section of trail after the step-up to avoid a flat, wet section.

Devilcross

Devilcross is a short trail. Before working on it in Spring 2006, it was deeply trenched along the middle section of the trail. Also, the trees had been thinned in the area, and some large ones were across the middle section. We decided to take the trail out of the dip that it had gone into and built the new section along the ridge. The original trail was kept until it turned down and away from the ridge. At this point, we brought it out and the whole new section accounts for probably 2/3rds of the current trail. The trail itself has a general downhill slope, although flat at times. The top of the trail is fast to ride down, starting at the end of a road. One short, steep hill at the start of the new section produces a lot of speed. After that, the trail becomes more level as it follows the ridge (or ledge) through the young trees. At the end of the trail, back onto the original trail, the trail goes down a large, somewhat steep rock face, requiring some technical ability and care.

A good portion the trail is built on exposed rock, more than any other trail on the mountain. Views include the Oly area, Mt. Baker and Lake Whatcom. The trail takes only a few minutes to ride, but if ridden at a good constant speed feels like a rollercoaster at times because of the small rolling downhills scattered throughout the trail, combined with the corners.
