WHIMPs in the Whatcom Indy

Now that we have had a chance to relax a bit and ride some of the fruits of our labor it is about time for us to do a quick write up on the TCC visit. We accomplished a lot but what we felt the most important was the coming together of a number of different builders, philosophies and melding them all into something that will work for our riding area Galbraith Mountain.

We had a GREAT turnout for all three days of the WHIMPs Hosted IMBA Trail Care Crew. We had some extra special help from the shops in town Clark's Cycle, Jack's Bicycle Center and Kulshan Cycles. Banditos Burritos provided us with some fuel and Granite Precast Concrete made us loads of cement footings. Kona donated a bunch of great swag for the after work BBQ (Kathy Crouch won the Kona Unit Single Speed Frame) and sponsored the eats too. SoulMaster MP brought the crew to his homestead for some grit and was spinning the food on the BBQ feeding the hungry mouths. Legendary builders poured over Map laying out future plans.

Trail Alert - Rifle Range fire road access is still closed

Need maps and directions for the local sweet trails? The WHIMPs recommend contacting and stopping by one of the local shops linked on the left and buying the 'stellar' Local Knowledge maps for only $5.  They cover the Tri-county area (Whatcom, Skagit and Island) including Galbraith Mountain. In fact the WHIMPs Trail Master, Galen Rockenbach makes the Local Knowledge maps. The local shops, Kulshan, Clarks, Jacks and Fairhaven also employ great people who can steer you in the right direction and are more than willing to help.

Quick Rules of the Trail

1.) Leave no trace
2.) Ride under control
3.) Don't frighten wildlife
4.) Yield to hikers
5.) Yield to horses
6.) Help others
7.) Have a lot of fun

Please remember and follow those simple rules above.

What are the WHIMPs?

The WHIMPs, Whatcom Independent Mountain Pedalers, are a non-profit organization that works with local agencies and other user groups to enhance and preserve the trail systems in Whatcom county.

The WHIMPs formed in 1986 and has been actively promoting open and multi use trail access since the first Greenways campaigns.

Looking for a Ride?

Since 1988, almost every Saturday of the year, you can find some WHIMPs meeting at the Lake Padden tennis courts at 10:00 a.m., rain, snow or shine for an Intermediate to Fast ride.

Don't be shy. If the group is big, we break off into smaller groups based on fitness level.  It's a great way to learn about the sweet rides in the area and network with fellow bikers. See our Club Information page for details and more ongoing rides.

Ride responsibly and safely.  Racing is great, just do it in the right situation, like the Padden MTN Pedal or BellyCROSS
