Unemployment Line:

Beginning on February 15th, 2010, a group of the best riders and builders in Whatcom County embarked on a project to completely overhaul of the former Luge trail.  The plan was to use a mini excavator to do the bulk of the dirt moving to create a brand new jump trail.  Because machine built jump trails allow riders to carry more speed, the ideal (overall) grade is between 5 and 8% to avoid brake bumps.   This project was lead by Colin Tobin, Andrew Fletcher-Love, Bill Hawk, Odin Kors, Matt Durand and Eric Brown.   The Plunder crew (Colin, Thad, Chris, Clayton and Vaughn) did the majority of the digging and shaping behind the machine, but there were many folks out helping day to day.  Drop N Zone, Transition Bikes and Hidden Wave all sponsored big trail days that promoted huge volunteer turnouts.

Unemployment Line was officially opened to the public on May 15th, 2010 and is approximately 5x longer than the old Luge and the final tally on the trail is 40 jumps, 22 berms and countless pumps.

Many thanks to Mark & Kathy Salisbury & Fanatik bike for the donated mini excavator, RAM Construction for the culverts, McEvoy Oil for Diesel, Jon Syre, the WMBC board and the extremely dedicated folks with the vision for making this happen. Additionally, many thanks to the folks who donated money to the cause.  This was truly a community effort.
